Exciting Chennai
Formerly known as Madras, Chennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, India. The city was renamed in 1996 as part of a series of name changes that reclaimed the local heritage of the area rather than the colonial empires that occupied the region for so long. Chennai was one a British naval base and has grown into an important cultural, commercial, and industrial center in India.
While visting this Indian metropolis, there is much to see and do. The city encompasses an entire national park, Guindy National Park. Chennai is also home to the Vandalur Zoo and the Botanical Garden. There are a number of beaches for those wishing to enjoy sun and seas. These include Marina Beach, Elliot’s Beach, and Covelong Beach with features a historic fort.
Chennai is also know for it’s art and culture. In addition to being the home of the National Art Gallery and the Valluvar Kottam auditorium, Chennai is known for Kalakshetra, a center for the revival of Indian art, crafts, and performing arts such as Bharatnatyam dance. The city also hosts a number of festivals and events. The most popular is the annual Madras Music Season which begins in December and features hundreds of artists performing over a five-week period.
There is a modern water park as well as three amusement parks that appeal to families. The city offers a wealth of shopping opportunities to appeal to bargain and treasure hunters alike. Diners can enjoy some of the best Indian food in the world as well as a variety of world cuisines while accomodations range from five star Chennai hotels to youth hostels and beach resorts.
