Phuket: Pearl of the Andaman
The island of Phuket is the largest in Thailand. Sometimes referred to as the “Pearl of the Andaman”, Phuket is a popular tourist destination due to its incredible beaches, vibrant nightlife, and natural beauty. Visitors can dine on fabulous Thai cuisine, stay in the luxurious five star hotels on Phuket, enjoy the exciting nightclubs, or just soak in the sun and natural beauty of the island.
Phuket is home to numerous beaches. Some of the largest include Surin Beach, Kamala Beach, Patong Beach, and Laem Singh Beach. Each has its own character, from crowded tourist magnet to quiet, secluded beaches. There are also a few smaller islands that are part of Phuket. Kho Hae is sometimes called Coral Island and is easily reachable by speed boat all year while Kho Bon (aka Bon Island) is a great place for snorkeling.
For those willing to step outside the beaches and modern cities, Phuket has even more natural wonders to view. The island has numerous parks and forest reserves. These feature exotic wildlife and waterfalls. It even boasts a virgin rainforest at the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. This preserve is home to a variety of animals, around hundred bird species, and incredible vegetation and trees. Sirinat Marine National Park encompasses several beaches and a wildlife reserve. This park actually extends into the ocean and includes coral reefs that are popular with snorkellers and divers.
Ban Pae Waterfall is the largest on the island. The Phutket Gibbon Rehabiliation Centre is located here. Ton Sai is another scenic waterfall worth checking out. Kathu Waterfall is good for swimming. It has several pools, with the higher ones being more beautiful than the lower. Most waterfalls will dwindle to a trickle during the dry season
