The Lure of Delhi, India
Located on the banks of the Yamuna river, Delhi is the capital of India and is an exciting city of contrasts. Here the “New Delhi” of British Imperialism sits side by side with the “Old Delhi” of Islamic India. The city has been inhabited since at least the sixth century B.C., though it has been destroyed seven times in its long history and has risen from the ashes each time.
Delhi offers the ancient and the modern and nearly everything in between. Visitors can explore historic landmarks, architecture of numerous eras, and experience traditional music, food, and bazaars. They can also enjoy modern cafes, bars, and shopping malls as well as cutting edge performing arts and architecture. Travelers can choose to stay in traditional lodgings or hotels with every modern convenience. Whether you choose simple accomodations or one of the Delhi five star hotels, you’ll have easy access to the contrasts of Delhi.
visitors may want to plan their trips to coincide with one of Delhi’s many festivals and events. Representing its diversity, Delhi is host to several religious festivals, including Diwali, cultural festivals such as the Qutub Festival, and other events such as the International Mango Festival, the Auto Expo, the World Book Fair, and the Kite Flying Festival.
Some of the “Must See” attractions include the Red Fort, the Chatta Chowk or “Covered Bazaar,” the Khas Mahal, and Humayun’s Tomb. More modern attractions include the National Science Centre, the National Railway Museum, and the Lotus Temple. Visitors will also want to be sure to sample the famous Delhi street food in addition to the many restaurants offering local and world cuisine.
