Cricket lovers know that any trip to India must include a visit to Kolkata. Formerly known as Calcutta, the city is home to the oldest cricket ground in the country: Eden Gardens which was established in 1864. Considered to by some to be cricket’s equivalent of the Coliseum, Eden Gardens is also known as the Lord’s of Asia. One of tne of the world’s largest cricket stadiums, it can seat over 100,000 spectators.
Eden Gardens first hosted first-class matches in 1917-1918. 1934 saw the first Test match played in January against Douglas Jardine’s MCC. Over the years, more than thirty Test matches have been played here. That is more Test matches than any other Indian cricket grounds. The first One day international match to be held on the grounds was played against pakistan in 1987. Since then Eden Gardens has hosted over twenty One day internationals.
During the 1987 World Cup, covered stands were built as was a pavilion and modern Club House. Today, the Club House is home to the offices for the Cricket Association of Bengal. In 1993, four floodlight towers were added to facilitate day-night matches such as the five-nation tournament played to celebrate the CAB Diamond Jubilee.
Visitors to Eden Gardens will want to make time to see the other sites of Kolkata. Government House, the Marble Palace, the Victoria Memorial and Fort William are some of the more popular landmarks. The city is also home to incredible shopping in a variety of bazaars, markets, and modern-day malls. Tourists will want to check out the various five star Kolkata hotels and make sure to sample the local restaurants, which are some of the best in India.
