Shopping in Bangkok
The global city that is Bangkok, Thailand was founded by the British as a trading post. Though those simple days are long gone, Bangkok retains a slower pace than many contemporary cities and offers a unique blend of natural and urban attractions to appeal to almost any tourist. The city is also a mixture of traditional influences and modern conveniences as well as a place where the cultures of East and West meet and fuse.
Many visitors are drawn to the city for its many historical and cultural attractions. Still others come to Bangkok for the delectable Thai food or exciting entertainment and nightlife. As the city grows in importance in finance and business, you’ll even find more and more business travelers staying in the best Bangkok hotels. But one of the best things about Bangkok is its shopping.
The Central World Plaza located in the commercial and shopping district of Ratchaprasong is Asia’s largest shopping mall. Bangkok is home to twenty-five malls as wella s department stores, superstores, and lifestyle shopping centers. Siam Square is very popular with shoppers and has been compared to both Oxford Street and Piccadilly Square in London.
Bangkok also offers traditional markets for those who want a local shopping experience. One of the remaining canals or khlongs in the Taling Chan district holds a floating market that is popular with residents and tourists alike. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is held in the northern part of the city and features 20,000 stalls selling every item imaginable including a wide variety of foods and snacks. Another popular market for tourists (and locals) is the Suan Lum Night Bazaar. This open air market is smaller than Chatuchak, but also offers lower prices on many items, sometimes as much as twenty percent lower. It also provides live music and a large food court as well as extensive beer gardens.
In addition to the sheer number of shopping opportunities in Bangkok, the city offers prices that can be significantly cheaper than in Western countries, especially for clothing and other locally-produced goods. Just be prepared to bargain for anything you want to buy.
