The Charm of Kuala Lumpur

As the largest city in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur serves as a financial and political center for the country and the surrounding region. Even though the city is experiencing tremendous growth as it builds its reputation as a global capital, KL (as it is affectionately known to residences and visitors alike) has managed to retain the quiet charm and slower pace that makes it a wonderful place to visit.

Home to the Malaysian Parliment as well as the residence of the Malay King and Queen, the city has a strong legislative and diplomatic presence. It also has a thriving business center, with several of the world’s tallest buildings and more under construction. Kuala Lumpur is the home of the Petronas Twin Towers. Currently the tallest twin towers in the world, they once held the distinction of the world’s tallest buildings. The Twin Towers have become a symbol of the city’s incredible growth and influence.

With a beautifully mild climate, Kuala Lumpur is an ideal vacation spot during most of the year. Even during the monsoon season, many days remain sunny and warm. Visitors will find a number of interesting sites in KL. These include the Istana Negara (the official royal residence), the National Mosque or Masjid Negara and Independence Square (Dataran Merdeka). In addition to the Petronas Twin Towers, there are several other modern skyscrapers with shopping malls, museums, parks, and other attractions attached to them.

One of the unique attractions of Kuala Lumpur is the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve — a complete, if small, tropical forest located in the middle of the city. Marine life can be observed at the Aquaria KLCC (located in the KL Convention Center) where over 5,000 different types of tropical fish reside.

Visitors will find the food to be outstanding. In addition to many local restuarants offering traditional cuisine, there are a number of fine dining establishments that have developed their own following and come together every year to hold the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival. Visitors will find a number of luxury 5 star hotels in Kuala Lumpur or can choose from a variety of accomodations that suit their particular budget and taste.
