It is no mystery, especially in current times, that ecosystems around the world are in trouble and need help. For without that help, not only are they in jeopardy, human life is as well. The Balearic islands have long been known for dedication and protection of the environment, through the installation of energy saving traffic lights and solar panels on the various businesses such as shops, corner cafes, and Ibiza boutique hotels. And now, considered by the government of Spain and the international community as well, the land and waters surrounding the islands in the Mediterranean have becoming protected lands, and waters. The relationship between the sea and land is perhaps no more evident than when one stands on the coast of an island, for what lies beneath the surface of the water, greatly affects what happens on land. Posidonian grass, or sea grass is important to the underwater world found in just the basin of the Mediterranean. Protection from storms and hurricanes is what this transparent leaf offers to the land and the people living and vacationing upon it, and offers up the same protection to the corral reefs that surround. Many of the species of fish and underwater mammals call the grass home, which is not only essential for the continuance of said life, but has become economically important to the fishing companies and hatcheries. The fields underwater produce as much oxygen and biomass as that of the Brazilian rain-forest The grass serves to cleanse and oxygenate the waters surrounding the islands.

Management plans already in existence and in the process of implementation, are underway. The headquarter for the organizations, such as the Salinas de Ibiza and Formentera, is located on the island itself, with a second located on the island of Formentera. The committee was demanded, by Spanish government, and is setting up to care for specific concerns and implementations currently, with various experts adding their knowledge. While it is fun to take a motor boat or jet ski out into the waters, people must be made aware that this all has negative effects on the protective and precious valleys of underwater fields of grass. Water treatments plants have been discussed and plans to implement them in the future are underway. Expansion of the port and underwater sewage lines have been proposed and in the coming years, these attempts will only serve to protect the value and contribution to the environment and the ecosystem of Ibiza.
