Folklore Theatre and Museum Now Open in Kochi
The Kerala Folklore Theatre and Museum opened earlier this month in Kochi, Kerala. The project was the dream of a Thaliyath couple to promote the traditional art forms of South India, especially of Kerala. The structure houses artifacts in a stunningly recreation of traditional Indian architecture.
The building is three stories high and houses a museum as well as two theaters for classical and folk art performances. Artifacts range from paintings to costumes, masks and even puppets and musical instruments. While most of the objects date from the 15th through 20th centuries, some are as much as 2000 years old.
The structure was the work of sixty skilled restoration experts and carpenters. Every aspect of the building is handmade. It is constructed of all natural materials: wood and clay tiles as well as laterate stone. The wood itself is either antique or used wood from the 20th century. In addition to boasting that no tree was cut to build the structure, the building is completly plastic free.
Kerala is a state in southwestern India. Ideally situated on the Arabian Sea, the region is known for its tropical forests, gorgeous beaches, and lush vegetation. The best hotels in Kerala take advantage of the state’s natural wonders while providing easy access to the various art and cultural attractions, such as the new Folklore Theatre.
