The Beautiful Creation of Dr. Ong Swee Law
In Singapore, in 1969 an incredible man with a vision and a concept that was just a bit out of the box for the time, came up with a plan for an open-air, cage free zoological garden. Dr.Ong Swee Law was serving as the Executive Chairman for the Public Utilities Board and decided to put the land set aside for parks, to use for something more. Most of the land was near natural bodies of waters and reservoirs. With the help of the Sri Lankan Colombu Zoo and wild-life researchers, zoologists , and botanists, construction began on the creation that would house animals in their natural environments. With wide open spaces and the room for families and social units and groups, instead of solitary animals sitting in cement and metal cages. Just four years later the zoo opened its doors to the public for the first time. On June 23rd the dream that began with a single idea was given to the people, over 250 animals from over 70 different species roaming and living as close to their nature as possible.
And the dedication to conservation and protection did not stop there. Three years ago the Wildlife Health Care and Research Center was opened on the zoo grounds. The zoo has also taken on as their responsibility rescue missions, much as the American Red Cross for human rescue missions. The zoo offers classes and seminars education the public on the importance of the protection and conservation of not only the environment, but of the animal inhabitants of that environment as well. Today, the zoo houses over 1,600 animals, from more that 250 different species. The classes and seminars do not just take part in class rooms as many of the exhibits and shows are meant to educate as well to entertain. The Splash Safari show for example, is very lively but is also intended to illustrate the dangers of all marine life all over the planet should we not sit up and pay attention. The zoo is situated in the city close to many other tourist attractions and easily accessible to the best Singapore hotels has to offer, providing fun…and education to tourists and locals as well.
