Music of the Week in Sheffield, April-2009
Sheffield is a city located just outside of Yorkshire, England well known as a music center, with many famous bands throughout rock history coming from the city, as well as a strong local band and music scene. One concert occured in Sheffield last week and one is coming up in just a few days. David Byrne performed last week at the Sheffield City Hall. Mr. Byrne is well known for his ability to put on a heart stopping show, not just a band concert or gig. Byrne is known to put his all into performing and this was no exception. Many traveled to the city to see this legendary performer, supporting not only all the local music venues, the restaurants but the Sheffield hotels as well. David Byrne has become topped with a head of gray hair, has aged as everyone, but still moves elegantly and coolly through the dance moves he is so well known for. A controlled and beautiful puppet, he glides across stage belting out the rock tune, “Burning Down the House”, while wearing a pink ballet tutu. This tour commemorates a career of 30 years, most of the work a collaborative effort with Brian Eno . The stage is set with not just his band, but dancers dressed, elegantly of course, in all white. After three encores, the show is finally over and the audience takes with them an experience that will last a lifetime.
Next Friday, Sheffield will host an equally anticipated event. Two folk legends will come together to perform at Wesley Center. During the 1960′s, Robin Williamson and John Redbourn exploded onto the folk music scene. The music scene itself was taking off in the United States as well as throughout all of Europe. Redbourn, a classical guitarist introduced to folk music in school has played with many folk legends, including Bert Jansch and Jacqui McShee. Together, the British traditional singer McShee and Jansch went on to form the folk band Pentangle. The two became very well known for creating the musical style referred to as Folk Baroque. Folk Baroque is characterized by two guitarists weaving their tunes around the other. For the last three years Redbourn has been collaborating with Williamson. Williamson was born in Scotland and is not only a singer-songwriter, but is a multi-instrumentalist as well. Audiences in Sheffield are in for a treat next Friday when these two legendary performers and history-makers take the stage.
