The Beaches of Alibag

Just in the middle of nature’s lap, sits the Indian town on the coast, Alibag.  This small coastal village is known for the white sand beaches, the clean air and the fresh waters.  Many of those staying in any given Bombay hotel, and those currently living in the city now known as Mubai , escape to this seaside town.  Just under 35 kilometers outside of the city, this is a quick retreat from the hectic life of day to day city dwelling. Alibag is a truly beautiful and amazing place, the best that nature has to offer.  Those who have traveled here find it hard to put into words the charm and the mysticism that surrounds this small beach town.  Literally a postcard lined with coconut trees.

The city of Alibag is just at the tip of South Mumbai, along the Arabian Sea.  From here, farm houses of the wealthy of Mumbai aside smaller houses of the village adding charm to the tiny village.  Previously the only way to reach this town was by boat from eitherMankule or Dharamtar.  Over the years however with the advent of tourism and travel, roadways have been constructed granting easier access.

The Kolaba Fort is a popular attraction.  The fort is usually surrounded by the Arabian Sea, however when the tide is low, those wishing to make the trek are easily able to walk to the fort.  There are many small and historic churches in Alibag such as the Vikram Vinayak Temple.  The architecture and the surrounding gardens make this a very peaceful and attractive location for a walk.  As just about everything in the town lends itself to peaceful charm, so it is even when it is in ruins.  The Janjira Fort is a dilapidated building, however still beautiful and still a popular spot for photographers.

The beaches are, however, the main attraction.  Many state that it is just the most spectacular place in India.  Some of the beaches are known for their indigenous plant-life such as Nagaon Beach.  And others, such as Kihim Beach, for the flora and the fauna.  Kihim is a secluded beach, filled with flowers and butterflies, and the possibility of sighting some of the rare tropical birds living in the wild.  A popular getaway for the rich and famous of the Bollywood movie industry is Mandawa Beach.  Many other small beaches line the Arabian Sea on the coast of Alibag, and there is something for everyone to discover and enjoy.
