Goa Pete

For five-star hotels, Goa has a lot to offer the savvy world traveler.  It has some of the finest beaches in the world, with an amazing diversity of landscapes.  There are different colors of sand, different types of rock, and amazing topographies that are all worth exploration.  There is also an eclectic blend of cultures here, with a distinctive Portuguese influence that is a relic of more turbulent times, as well as influxes of tourists and expatriates from around the world.  There is a warmth and hospitality here that is certainly evident in the hotels.  The hotel are glorious and luxurious testimonies to an embrace of tradition and innovation.

One artifact of the cultural blend here is the global phenomenon of Goa Trance music, and one innovator worth checking out is Goa Pete, currently based in Canada.  The evolution of Goa Trance is a story of human migrations and intercultural experiments.  In the 60s, Goa had a number of hippie tourists, coming to India from the U.S. and Europe seeking spiritual enlightenment.  This continued in the 70s, and in the 80s some of the root music of Goa trance started becoming popular.  In the 90s it really started to become the form that it’s recognized as today.  Part of a larger genre called Electronic Body Music (or EBM), Goa Trace, or Psych Trance, is an electronic trance form that is popular in rave culture.  Interestingly enough, Goa Trance is not as popular in Goa as it is in Israel, South Africa, and even Finland.  Some of the best Goa Trance artists are from either England or Israel.  Israel’s love of this music is due, in large part, to the word of mouth by Israeli soldiers who come to Goa on holiday, and like what they hear.

It’s an interesting form, with an interesting history.  Goa Pete has a story no less interesting.  Born in India, he started traveling to Goa in 1989, and it became an annual trip for him.  Eventually, he fell so in love with the place that he moved there and lived on the beach for awhile, and began to hone his musical craft.  He then moved to Vancouver, looking for places to spread the musical word, as it were, and found a home at his current haunt, Organix.  There, mesmerized youth culture can listed to Goa Pete’s exciting and psychedelic sounds, that keep the global party moving in new directions.
