Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
The current ruler of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is also the Prime Minister of the entire United Arab Emirates. He was born on July 22, 1949, the third son of Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The family is descended from the House of Al-Falasi. The Al Maktoum family is known for their support of the arts, particularly traditional Arabic poetry. They are also extremely interested in and supportive of sports, with a specific passion for camel and horse racing. Western tourists who are staying in one of the business hotels Dubai are often attracted to the camel racing tracks, as this sport is not available in most western countries.
Sheikh Mohammed began his education at a very young age. Beginning at the age of four he received private tutoring in Islamic and Arabic studies. He began his formal education in 1955 when he attended Al Ahmedia School. When he was ten he transferred to Al Shaab School where he studied for two years. He then moved on to the Dubai Secondary School before he and a cousin went to the United Kingdom to study at the Bell Educational Trust’s English Language School. He has two wives and 19 children. The family is extremely socially active and they take part in aiding and assisting countries that are in need. They have taken part in effort projects for Egypt, Yemen, Palestine and Jordan.
In addition to being sports enthusiasts, the Al Maktoum family also participates. In 2006, one of his eight sons, Rashid, took the gold medal for individual endurance at the 15th Asian Games. He and three other sons took the gold medal for team endurance. His niece Latifa made a bronze placing for Show Jumping, and his daughter Maitha was the leader of the UAE taekwondo team. In addition, Al Maktoum is a significant international figure in Thoroughbred horse breeding and racing. He made a recent purchase of Australia’s Woodlands Stud empire, which is the largest the country.
