Eating and Drinking Ibiza

We asked at the hotels Ibiza provides and asked about beaches. They said avoid the north as it was full of jellyfish. Jellyfish! My friend Monica (the short one) was allergic so she said and we went east instead. Still, I wanted to go see all these jellyfish, being from Illinois and all. But she won out and off we went, picking up a picnic lunch on the way. It was a crusty sandwich with localasparagus and chicken salad. It was kind of messy but delicious. It was my first attempt at Catalan cooking, and I must say it was delicious. It was considered a torrada, but not open faced but with a lid of that crusty kind of sour dough bread. It was slathered in garlic mayonnaise (I think) and was gone in a flash. so much for our beach picnic!
What started as a beach day turned into an eating day. We had started the day with delicious xurros amb xocolat, churros with chocolate, and you could get croissants, some are filled and creamy. I of course wanted to go to the cerveserias for beer. The food reflected the land and sea approach to cooking the Catalan chefs practice, just don’t ask for butter for your bread.
Ibicican restaurants usually close int the late afternoon. this gives you a good chance to catch up on your sangria intake. I don’t care for the banana sangrias, call me a purist but I like the apples and oranges with my white wine or Champagne.
These drinks are more potent than back home, so we got a little giddy, but now before chilling out with a nice horchata. They are made with crushed nuts and very refreshing and very good for you. We all need a little fortification while we drink away the day. Ah Ibiza!
