Eating Around Udaipur
Udaipur is sometimes called the Venice of the East, a most beautiful city of Rajasthan. Watch the James Bond movie Octopussy before you go to see the crazy motorized chases in and around the city’s stunning landmarks. Or not, see it there at daily free showings at 7pm. We left our hotel in Udaipur jokingly expecting to have to dodge Roger Moore in a motorized rickshaw.
We shot over to Ambrai, a restaurant on the near the famous Pichola Lake. Once described as something out of a dreamy fable, the now depleted and trash strewn lake, partly the result of tempermental monsoons, is making a comeback. Never the less, we enjoyed the magnificent tandoori, it was truly wonderful. We took in the lovely undulating hills, the intricate and decorative balconies of City Palace Rajput, the temples and white-washed havelis.
There are so many cuisines in this ravishing city, everything from fast food pizzas, chat, and anything you can make into a patty. You can have Chinese and Thai and Italian too. For authentic cuisine of Udaipur , try the fabulous Dal-Baati-Churma and other dishes made up of lentils, spices beyond belief, and vegetables. The vegetarian character of many of the Udaipur dishes comes from the influence of Vaishnavism. Have ocra, yogurt soups and fritters (especially the chilli).
Sometimes we needed to go off the Indian food, though, and we just wanted coffee. There’s a German bakery that offered salads and sandwiches. And cakes and other nice pastries. You really can have it all.
For a romantic dinner, try the Lake Palace. Have a reservation and dress well or it’s a no go. The buffet table, candle lit, is wonderful. Or, you can try the stalls of Sukhadia Circle for quick bites if romance isn’t in the cards.
