Of all the places in the world to travel, car hire in South Africa is especially important. The more adventurous tourists will appreciate the independence a car can offer here, in this vast country with thousands of attractions. Being able to set your own schedule is a plus, as there are always way too many things to choose from. There are excellent distractions in the cities, with clubs, discos, museums, galleries, theatres, and restaurants to keep every member of the family happy and enjoying their time here. There are also fantastic offerings outside the more populated areas, and a car is essential for making sure that no time is wasted in enjoying South Africa from the driver’s seat. Of equal interest are the multitude of festivals that happen on South African soil, celebrations of the country’s diversity, visual and performing arts festivals, music festivals, and festivals celebrating the outdoors just because we like the outdoors here.
One of the most well-attended festivals is held in Grahamstown every year, the National Arts Festival. This event effectively doubles the population of Grahamstown for the two weeks in June-July, and it’s essential for the livelihood of the town. Participation and attendance adds to the cultural fabric, and visitors from outside South Africa are absolutely more than welcome, which makes this a perfect event for those guests who have their own transportation. There is something for all ages here, and it’s worth spending the time to see as much of the festival as possible. There are events here that are particular to the country, but there are also international acts, performed for a very enthusiastic crowd.
One of the most visible attractions at the National Arts Festival is the theatre, drawing works and attendance from all over the world, and making this a contender in the fringe circuit. There are also multimedia installations here by some of South Africa’s most provocative artists, grounded at the very edges of the avant-garde. There are also spectacular music acts, performing live sets from all styles and genres. On top of this, there are literary events, such as author readings and lectures. In addition to this, there techno raves and opera. Breathlessly, but not finally, there are also brilliant flea markets, in a marketplace that reflects the world in a microcosm. There are also street performers and spontaneous acts of art and performance that all add up to an amazing time for everyone.
