Virginia, A Tradition of Presidents

Virginia, USA is sometimes affectionately referred to as the mother of presidents due to its having been the birthplace of eight of the United States presidents. This is actually a remarkable number and it begins with the first president himself, George Washington. Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe were also on the list and while this is certainly a point of pride for the citizens of Virginia, it is also an extremely interesting fact for tourist staying in one of the Virginia luxury hotels to earn during their stay.

George Washington was the first of the United States Presidents and took the office in 1789. There are many legends and stories attached to the first present and the development of the government, new nation and following political system. One of the most popular stems from his childhood when it was reported that he chopped down a cherry tree. When questioned about it, his response was that he could not tell a lie and admitted to the deed. This is commonly used as an allegorical tale that demonstrates the truthful and responsible orientation to the government, and generally establishes a trust in children for the system. Prior to his office as the President, Washington fought in the American Revolutionary War of 1775 through 1783.

Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States and served in the office from 1801 to 1809. He is fundamentally known and remembered as primary writer of the Declaration of Independence, which happened in 1776. Much of his political philosophy was based on Enlightenment principles and he was a strong advocate for the separation of church and state. James Monroe was the fifth President and served in office from 1817 to 1825. One of the most well known as aspects of his presidency is the Monroe Doctrine that was strongly opposed to continued European colonization efforts in the Americas.
