Musician Considers Relocating After Auditioning For Malaysia Orchestra

Sally was a mildly successful twenty something violinist who had all the ingredients of forging a healthy career in music. This is an incredibly difficult thing to do, and the classical or symphonic music industry is enormously competitive. It’s easy to understand when considering that there are a finite and relatively small number of professional orchestras, and the positions in them are generally filled until a musician retires or no longer wishes to play. So it is an incredibly tight potential job field and the turn over it experiences is astronomically low.

Of course Sally knew all of this when she decided to pursue her music degree at the conservatory. Her parents were direct with her when they expressed that they had wanted her to get into business or psychology or journalism even. They had encouraged her lessons and playing the violin through high school because they felt it was a great hobby that would expand her mind and personal horizons. They also read that students who studied music also did much better in subjects like math and sciences. They never intended, however, for her to pursue a career in it.

Sally thought about all of that as she sat in the café drinking some tea and having a bite to eat. Her violin was back in her room at one of the luxury hotels Malaysia where she was staying. She had auditioned that morning for the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and was trying to unwind with her cup of tea. She felt the audition went well, but of course she knew she was up against strong competition. Also, if she landed the position, she would have to relocated again, but that was part of the musician’s life and was something she accepted and even kind of embraced when she decided to pursue music.
