The New Victory Theatre, New York City

When you ask an actor in a small town, where they want to be on stage.  When you ask a playwright, where they want their work put up.  When you as a theatrical singer, where they want to perform…the answer has been for decades…Broadway! of course.  As the famous song goes, making it on Broadway in New York City, means that you can make it anywhere.  There are so many theatres around the world, so why then as Broadway become synonymous with it, with the accomplishment of the stage arts in every aspect be it acting, directing or singing?

One reason is that when a show is currently running on one of the stages, it states that the show is known throughout the world.  When touring companies take it on the road, it is still known as a Broadway show.  The bright lights and the theatres on Broadway have been drawing people to New York for decades, be they fans or be they invested in the world of the stage and travel to the city to work in the best restaurants in New York City while the wait to make their break into show business—imaginations and dreams run wild on Broadway.

The New Victory is one of these theatres that has inspired people since 1900 when it opened as “Theatre Republic”.  Although the theatre has been renovated and the name has been changed, it is the longest operating theatre in the city.  This is what in show business, as a “good run”.  Lyric art and drama has been the focus of the shows, except during a brief run from 1932 to 1937 when burlesque was the name of the game.  Since the renovation of the New Victory Theatre, the whole block of 42nd Street has also undergone some changes.  There are only 449 seats, so any show seen here will be an intimate experience of a Broadway show.  It is for this reason that when you are traveling to New York, make certain to get your tickets in advance for current shows at the New Victory Theatre.
