Cycling on Formentera

If you’re looking for a remote place to do some bicycling, a place that has beautiful views, clean beaches, and where you’re also allowed to shed your clothes and sunbathe, consider Formentera, the island just four miles south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. This place is a hidden treasure, just one half hour by boat from Ibiza.  The island is mostly flat, and about 11 miles long and 8 miles wide, particularly well suited for cycling.

Once you arrive at the Ibiza Airport, it’s easy to find your way across.  Take a taxi to Puerto Formenta, about a ten minute drive, then ferry to Formentera, which will take another half hour.  The ferry’s leave every 1 and a half hour, with the first ferry departing around 7:45 a.m., and the last at 8 p.m.  You can book the ferry tickets at a kiosk port-side.  Travel time to the hotels formentera has to offer will vary, but, remember, the island is only 11 miles long!  Once there, you can hire bicycles at the port.  Definitely, avoid the wait for coaches and take the taxis!

My first thought on seeing Formentera was that it was completely different from Ibiza.  Much quieter.  Much more relaxed.  Instead of all the vehicles in Ibiza port, there were about three cars, a couple of coaches, and few hundred bikes.  None of the buildings were over three stories, and the atmosphere was definitely relaxed.

The island contains many great beaches, and the way to find them best is on a bicycle.  Cycle around until you discover a secluded beach of your own — you can go the entire day and not see anyone else!  Beaches aren’t crowded (the whole population is something like six thousand), and you can bike round the whole island in a single day.  Take a backpack for swim wear and water — I should point out here that while some of the beaches are “clothing optional,” the main beaches require swim suits.  If you don’t read the signs, you can find yourself on a nude beach accidentally, like I did!  Of course, I stayed there all day, and returned the next day, too.  Nice, but not the kind of place where you want to see any of your co-workers!
