High chairs and Captain’s Chairs

There is always comfort in a chair. Everyone eventually gets to the age where they realize they do have a favorite chair, and it can become the focal point of everything relaxing at the end of the day. The captain’s chair , as it might be known in some households, is the place where the television controls are always near at hand, and snacks are plentiful. It’s the command center of the house, and all the attention must turn to it.

It might sound like the object of an ego on the verge of getting old, but it’s got its counterparts in the trappings of childhood. The captain’s chair, after all, has to trace its origins to high chairs , the original command centers. These are the spots where the most important person in the household was set to see over all of the activities going on, and to offer harsh criticisms when things weren’t exactly right.

For this reason, they have a kind of iconic position in many cultures. Families put their hopes here, and there is always a sense of compassion and care for the one who occupies that seat. It’s no wonder that people remember the high chair with fondness, and then try to re-create it in later years.
